1. Explain the differences between overt and covert learning strategies. (Understanding)
2. Based on your prior knowledge of problem solving, how could you use the problem solving strategies listed in the book in your future classroom- algorithm and heuristics (Synthesizing)

  1. Overt learning strategies are strategies you can physically see (i.e. note taking or keeping a calendar of classroom assignments).
Covert learning strategies are internal strategies like monitoring your own learning and understanding (you cannot physically see if someone is learning something) or picking out the important pieces of information (not physically writing out but organizing the information internally).

In my classroom, I will have simple steps for the children to know for transition times (like an algorithm). For example, when the children come into my classroom in the mornings, I might have them 1. Hang up their coat and put away their backpack. 2. Sign in on our classroom sign in sheet (trace over a highlighted spelling of their name). 3. Get their name tag to take and pin on the sign to a work station that they would like to work at until it is time for morning group.

I will use heuristics problem solving ideas when talking with the children about behaviors. If someone is having a behavior problem, I could sit down with them and we could make a chart of things that they could do instead of doing the behavior that's not beneficial to the whole classroom learning environment. For example, if a child is having trouble sitting quietly during a large group reading time, he or she might say other behaviors they could do would be 1. not sit by friends who they are tempted to talk to 2. go work in a work station until they are reading to participate in a group time 3. help me with leading a group time
Any of those solutions might or might not work depending on the child and the day, so that would be a heuristic problem solving approach.
